The Aztec Empire
This is a project on the Aztec Empire. Below, each group member writes about why they think it is important for us, today, to study the Aztecs and understand their culture.
The Aztec Empire was a society with great technological advancements that they are often not credited for today. Before anyone from
Europe made contact with the Aztecs, they had built an amazing society, with beautiful and brilliant architecture, agriculture, and society. The enormous value placed on education in Aztec culture is admirable, and certainly contributed to their well-organized and functioning society. As we move forward in time, it is important to continue to study the Aztec culture because, arguably, the time before the Europeans came was one of the most successful for the Americas. Amazing cultures, like that of the Aztecs, were thriving all over North and South America, and though they do not come into play with the Western version of history until the 1400s, they had been flourishing all along. We can learn important things from the culture that the Aztecs had built. For the people living near Mexico City, where the Aztec Empire’s center was located, it is part of the history of their home, and that makes it an important part of their history. However, it is important for everyone today to learn about the
Aztec Empire. Not only because their extremely advanced and self-sufficient culture is interesting, but also because the Aztecs made contributions to history that continue to affect our lives today. When the Spanish came to Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, the Aztecs shared with them their religion, their food, and their culture. The Spanish were amazed by how such a brilliant society had been built on the other side of the world, while Europe and Asia were going through so many hardships. Though the Aztecs did not tie into the Western version of history until the 1500s, the history they had before meeting the Spanish is important, and certainly helped to shape the culture of South America, particularly Mexico, today. In order to have a complete view of history, we must see it from all sides, and we cannot do this without taking time to study and appreciate the beautiful culture of the Aztec Empire.
